Ken Phuong

Ken joined Design Engineers in March 2023 as a Structural Director. He has over 10 years of experience as a Structural Engineer in New Zealand. He has developed and implemented successful design strategies in cross-disciplinary environments and works closely with architects, builders, and engineers to deliver our clients' developments. He has an open mind and a can-do attitude to problem-solving, and the team works well with him.
His background combines experience, knowledge, and training in Construction, Architecture, and Structural Engineering, which has strengthened his approach to complex structural projects. Ken can provide structural advice that contributes to the benefit, feasibility, constructability, and success of the projects.
Ken is responsible for leading our structural team to design new structures, assess, and strengthen existing structures. He has led the team on education, large commercial, healthcare, high-end residential, sculpture, and streetscape projects across New Zealand, such as Summerset Half Moon Bay, a 4x eight-storey apartment & care building with a budget of $300 million, Ryman Healthcare Riccarton Apartment worth $20 million, and Pacific Lake Village Pavilion in Tauranga worth $17 million. He has also worked on New World Victoria Park Supermarket extension and seismic strengthening, Northshore & Waitakere Hospital's MRI replacement & alterations, Kaipara College Innovation Centre, Riverhead school, Flatbush school, Kiwirail Office extension, and Amenity building for Gisborne Inner Harbour. He has peer-reviewed 3 x 14th Story Apartment Blocks at 139 Greys Ave and 3 x 9 Storey Blocks N25 – 16-26 Frase Ave. He has also conducted Detailed Seismic Assessments for FENZ’s Fire Stations and worked on 2x 18th Storey the Volt Apartments at 430 Queen St. Ken has contributed to Queen street’s streetscape development, Otahuhu town centre streetscape development worth $16 million, Federal streetscape development worth $13 million, and Mt Albert Streetscape development, among others.
